It’s the truth time for Zachary Quinto! Mr. Spock from ‘Star Trek’ reboot admits that he’s gay. In an interview to New York Magazine, the 34-year-old actor says that his role in ‘Angels In America’ helped him to come out.
In the Brodway play, Quinto plays a gay man who dumps his AIDS-afflicted boyfriend. He says the role made him realize many gay men are afraid to tell the truth about their sexuality.
“As a gay man I look at that and say there’s a hopelessness that surrounds it. but as a human being I look at it and say ‘Why? Where’s this disparity coming from, and why can’t we as a culture and society dig deeper to examine that?’ We’re terrified of facing ourselves”, he says.
So far, Quinto has been an advocate for gay rights, he played in ‘The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later’ in 2009, he attended a banquet to support the gay rights and he made a video called ‘It Gets Better’ in 2010. He also played various gay roles.
On Sunday morning, Quinto posted a post on his website explaining why he decided to come out as a gay. “When I found out that Jamey Rodemeyer killed himself I felt deeply troubled. But when I found out that Jamey Rodemeyer had made an ‘It Gets Better’ video only months before taking his own life I felt indescribable despair”, he wrote.
Quinto added that living a gay life isn’t easy, but that every gay man has the responsibility to “complete equality”. “I believe in the power of intention to change the landscape of our society and it is my intention to live an authentic life of compassion and integrity and action”, he said.
