Susan Sarandon: Pope Benedict XVI Is a “Nazi”

Losing her religion? Susan Sarandon doesn’t seem to like Pope Benedict XVI too much. Actually, the 63-year-old actress seems to dislike the current head of the Catholic Church. Her antipathy goes to that point where she calls him “a nazi”.
“The last one not this Nazi one we have now”, Susan said during a discussion of ‘Dead Man Walking’, the 1995 film in which she starred as real-life Sister Helen Prejean.

The actress talked to actor Bob Balaban at the Bay Street Theatre in Sag Harbor, New York while on Saturday. At one moment, she told Balaban she sent a copy of Prejean’s original book to the Pope. That was the moment she clarified she was talking about Pope John Paul II, not about “this Nazi” Pope Benedict XVI.
According to Newsday, Balaban tried to make it look like the actress was joking or something, but she insisted she was serious.
84-year-old German-born Pope Benedict XVI succeeded Pope John Paul II in 2005.

I'm no great devotee of Benedict XV, but I'm absolutely appalled at Sarandon's remarks. I've always been so happy to see her supporting progressive causes, and now she shows such a breach of good judgment. She owes the Pope a public apology, and she owes all of us some kind of explanation. I hope she'd just had one cocktail too many and hope she'll come clean about it now.
