Olivia Culpo wins Miss Universe
Miss Universe is Miss USA! Olivia Culpo was crowned as Miss Universe on Wednesday night, December 19 in Las Vegas.
The 20-year-old former Miss Rhode Island becomes the first American to win the contest since 1997. The last American to win was Hawaii’s Brook Lee.
Miss Philippines, Janine Tugonon, came in second, and Miss Venezuela, Irene Sofia Esser Quintero, finished third.
“What an honor! This night was a dream come true. Thank you everyone for your support tonight!! USA finally did it!” the Boston University student wrote on Twitter after winning. “Rise and shine!! Makeup time with @Yukyan51 for a long day of media. Ready for day one of #MissUniverse life ”, she added on December 20.
Now that Culpo won the title, Miss Maryland, Nana Meriwether becomes the new Miss USA.
In a recent interview, Culpo said that the Miss Universe competition was a whole different challenge than Miss USA. “For Miss USA, I felt more pressure to be lean. Here, they’re bigger and taller. The look of Miss Universe is more voluptuous”, she told the Boston Herald.
Last year Leila Lopes of Angola was voted Miss Universe 2011.
