NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has been diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia.  "I was getting hot flashes and sweats on a regular basis. That's not normal, even for my age….I was scared. I thought it was all the same. I thought it could mean I have a month to live. That was my first question. Was I going to make it?" he declared for The Associated Press. The NBA's all-time leading scorer said that his doctor said he has "a very good chance to live your life out and not have to make any drastic changes to your lifestyle." Now, 62 years old Abdul-Jabbar is taking an oral medication for the disease. Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis is making him a special drug that treats the illness.
"Having lost one of my closest friends to a different, highly aggressive form of leukemia, I knew how serious my diagnosis was. My own life expectancy became a question mark", he said.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar won five championships with the Los Angeles Lakers before his retirement in 1989.
