According to Wikipedia, the Easter is a Christian feast and holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after his crucifixion. Easter is preceded by Lent, a forty-day period of fasting, prayer, and penance. The last week of Lent is called Holy Week including Maundy Thursday and the Last Supper, as well as Good Friday, commemorating the crucifixion and death of Jesus.
Easter customs vary across the Christian world and they include: attending sunrise services, exclaiming the Paschal greeting, clipping the church and decorating Easter eggs, a symbol of the empty tomb. Additional customs include egg hunting, the Easter Bunny and Easter parades.
The Easter is a movable feast because it doesn’t fall on a fixed date in the Gregorian or Julian calendars. Eastern Christianity bases its calculations on the Julian Calendar.
In the United States, Easter Sunday is a flag day but has not been a federal and state holiday due to falling on a Sunday, which is already a free working day for federal and state employees. On Easter day, every retail store, shopping mall, bank and some restaurants are closed. This time of year, schools give spring breaks for one or two weeks. In the US, the Easter Bunny is a gift-giving character analogous to Santa Claus. The Bunny brings people all kind of gifts making the year’s second Christmas-like feast. Some Americans follow the tradition of coloring hard-boiled eggs and giving baskets of candies on Easter.
