After the injury he suffered yesterday, David Beckham checked into the Mehilainen hospital, in Finland for a surgery on his torn left Achilles' tendon. But even so, David's hopes to play in 2010 World Cup are not very optimistic. Surgery is set for later Monday or Tuesday. "I am upset but (want) to thank everyone for their messages of support. I hope to make a swift and full recovery", 34 years old soccer player said in a statement posted on his personal website.
David was injured in the closing minutes of AC Milan's 1-0 win over Chievo Verona on Sunday in the Italian League.
Yesterday, a close source told The Associated Press that "he will miss the World Cup for sure".
A Finnish doctor set to operate on Beckham said there's a "glimmer of hope" the midfielder will recover in time for the World Cup in South Africa, which runs from June 11-July 11. Specialist surgeon Dr. Sakari Orava told Finnish news agency STT the operation likely would last about an hour and that Beckham would probably spend the night in Turku. "If it's a partial, small-grade tear it may be good in a few weeks but if it's a total tear ... it can be a question of several months",  Orava said.
"We have to wait for the results of the scan, but it looks like he is out of the World Cup. David is a great professional and has worked very hard to be ready for the World Cup, so missing it will be a big blow", England coach Fabio Capello said. He spoke with Beckham on the telephone to offer best wishes.
